Somatic Trauma Therapy

Body-based approaches to release stored trauma and restore a sense of safety.

Tap into Your Body’s Natural Ability to Release Trauma with the Support of a Licensed Somatic Trauma Therapist

Maybe you have tried talk therapy before, but it didn’t work for you. Our bodies remember every experience, even those we cannot fully articulate. Somatic therapy harnesses your body’s innate ability to heal on a nervous system level, offering true relief and transformation where traditional talk therapy might fall short. By engaging directly with the body, this approach helps release unprocessed emotions and stored trauma, leading to a deeper and faster healing process.

Recognizing the Signs of Unprocessed Trauma

Do you have strong, unwanted emotional reactions to situations in the present or find yourself engaging in behaviors that don’t feel aligned with your true self? These are often signs of unprocessed trauma. Trauma can stem from more extreme events, but it can also arise from less obvious experiences, like feeling unaccepted, being bullied, or growing up with emotionally unavailable, alcoholic, or narcissistic parents. When these wounds remain unhealed, they manifest as depression, anxiety, overwhelm, and even physical symptoms such as migraines, digestive issues, and autoimmune concerns.

The Transformative Power of Somatic Healing

Somatic counseling offers a unique alternative to conventional approaches by addressing the root cause of these challenges. Techniques somatic therapy work together to help your nervous system process and release the deep-seated memories and emotions stored in your body. This method goes beyond merely talking about your experiences—it provides a pathway to healing that is both profound and efficient.

Many find that working with an expert somatic trauma therapist offers a transformative alternative to talk therapy. By targeting the physical manifestations of unprocessed trauma, somatic therapies help you move beyond feelings of stagnation and start experiencing a renewed sense of vitality and alignment. Your body already holds the wisdom to heal, it’s time to let it lead the way.

Somatic Therapy Techniques for Trauma Recovery

The therapists on our team use several somatic therapy techniques that harness the deep connection between the body and mind to facilitate trauma resolution.

Integral Somatic Psychology is a body based therapy developed by Raja Selvam, PHD, (a Somatic Experiencing trainer and practitioner) that helps expedite treatment through helping clients learn how to embody their emotions in order to resolve symptoms faster. This therapy uses techniques such as self-touch, breath, vocalization, intention, and supportive postures to expand your ability to embody and feel your emotions. When your capacity to embody your emotions expands, you will experience relief from symptoms/ unwanted behaviors that have been arising from overwhelm in your system.

Brainspotting is a somatic therapy that identifies specific eye positions or “brainspots” that correlate with stored emotional and physical distress. By focusing on these key points, the therapy enables the body to release the tension and trauma it holds, allowing for a more integrated and natural healing process.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) similarly operates on the principle that our bodies retain the imprints of traumatic experiences. Through bilateral stimulation, EMDR helps reprocess and integrate distressing memories, reducing their emotional intensity and physical manifestations.

Art therapy is a powerful form of somatic therapy that channels creativity to unlock and release stored emotions. Through art-making, tap into non-verbal ways of expressing and processing trauma. This creative process allows unexpressed emotions to find a physical outlet, enabling the nervous system to work through tension and stored trauma in a safe, embodied manner.

These techniques bypass the limitations of traditional talk therapy by directly addressing the body’s response to trauma, leading to faster and more profound results.
